Last week, the school received 60 saplings following a successful application to take part in the Woodland Trust’s Free Trees for Schools programme.

Last Friday, BGS students took a trip up to Cople Fields to get digging and plant rowan, wild cherry and silver birches. The group donned their wellies, grabbed their spades and got to work – 60 trees are a lot to plant in the space of 40 minutes!

Although slightly chilly, the day was bright and sunny, which made for perfect planting weather and everyone soon warmed up. Before we knew it, we had six rows of fully planted and staked saplings in the ground, an excellent example of teamwork by all. These join the 400+ trees we had previously received from the Woodland Trust and planted at Cople in 2016, all of which are now firmly established and growing well at the site.

Sabira Egan (Lower Sixth) said: “The activity of planting trees was enjoyable and peaceful. It’s good to know that by planting trees, I have done my part in helping to reduce the impacts of climate change, an important and topical issue right now and one that is significant for my future.”
