On Wednesday 15th January, our Year 7 girls spent the day at the Airbus Foundation Discovery Space (AFDS) in Stevenage. The centre, which was launched in May 2018, is a digital space where students can discover aerospace through hands-on experiences.
The purpose of the visit is for pupils to develop their problem-solving skills and their understanding of the workings of the space industry, by doing practical workshops involving the real life applications of Mathematics and Physics. During the trip, the girls participated in various STEM workshops including rocket launching, robotics and 3D documentary viewing.
Here are some student reflections from the trip:
Sophie Wood
“My favourite activity at Airbus was the mini rover programming activity. I learned how to program a Lego robot, which had to be programmed by rotations of the wheels. It was also very fascinating to learn about the beginning of the Solar System and to find out how it was formed.”
Bella Moretto
“It was really good to use our creative and problem solving skills in the many hands-on and interactive activities about space. The trip has inspired me to pursue a career in STEM when I am older. Overall, this was a very good trip, and I would definitely go again.”
Isla Harris
“I thought that the trip was really educational, and I learnt a lot of new facts about the Solar System. It was very clever how the Discovery Space used many entertaining fact based activities, which made it more interesting and fun.”
