Having qualified by finishing in the top two schools at their county tournament, the first XI lacrosse team were now looking to put in strong performances at the South East finals, which took place at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School on Saturday 1st February.
The teamwork from the very start of the day was second to none, as the girls successfully managed to work together to pitch the gazebo in some very windy conditions. The tournament had ten of the top teams competing in two groups of five with only the top two in each group qualifying for a place in the semi-finals.
Despite the tough conditions, BGS put in some outstanding performances. In their final group game, they needed to win or draw to have enough points to progress to the semi finals. Competing against an undefeated St George’s School for a semi final spot, BGS set the pace of the game and worked incredibly hard to win possession off the centre draws. Their patience in attacking play, coupled with outstanding defensive work ensured they got the result they deserved and went on to win the game 4-2, placing BGS at the top of their group.
The semi final was nail biting with BGS having plenty of the possession, however, St Catherine’s had the slight edge with their goalkeeper making impressive saves. The final result was 1-4, but BGS certainly did not feel defeated, finishing top four for the first time was a fantastic achievement. They will take their positive mind set to the National Schools Lacrosse Competition on the weekend of 29th Feb – 1st March.
