Mr Atkins (Music Teacher)
As ever, last week’s Rock Night at the Quarry Theatre was another roaring success, with a range of performances showcasing the outstanding musical skill of which the BGS community is rightly proud. As well as featuring in their own groups nurtured right here in Trinity House – from Purdey Blackstock’s (Year 11) aggressively energetic lead guitar playing to Victoria Pinney (Year 11) and Emily Palmer’s (Year 11) powerfully nuanced performances – BGS students were in great demand as key supporting members of other bands throughout the Harpur Trust.
One of the most encouraging groups of the evening was the recently established Le Funk – a combined band consisting of members of BGS and Bedford School bringing a fresh take on soul and funk classics. Fronted by Victoria Pinney (Year 11) and Laura Ellis (Year 10) and with Sarah Pepper (Year 8) and Charlotte Sanders (Year 10) on alto saxophone and cornet respectively, the group delivered renditions of Duffy and Stevie Wonder with a rare degree of finesse and confidence in such a new outfit. With plans to develop a full gigging set list by the summer, this group promises to feature heavily in future events at BGS and further afield.
In short, the evening was a fine display of musical prowess from across the Harpur Trust as well as an impressive reminder of the collaborative opportunities on offer for our hugely talented students.
