Miss Elsom (Drama, Theatre and Events Technician) and Miss Middleton (Theatre Design Technician)

As we returned from Half Term, Year 9 Theatre Crew began exploring the world of Model Making with students making connections to their curriculum work in Year 8, where they were given the opportunity to look at and explore shoe box models; using everyday objects to create a set design for A Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare. This unit of work is a favourite as students really get the chance to be creative and explore another aspect of Theatre Making.

Building on this work, Year 9 Theatre Crew are looking specifically at White Card Models, which are industry standard for Theatres, business conferences and architecture. They are using lots of transferable skills such as ratios from Maths and material design from textiles and texture from art as well as developing multi-step problem solving and critical and logical thinking.

This section of the Theatre Crew training programme is delivered by our Theatre Design Technician, Miss Jasmine Middleton, a graduate of Nottingham Trent University. Whilst at university, Jasmine studied set design and learnt how to create models using a variety of techniques and has since gone on to work as an assistant model maker and CAD designer. Jasmine also works closely with Drama GCSE and A Level students, who can elect to be a design candidate, to develop their design skills further as they progress through the school.

With most Theatre venues closed, we are so glad that our pupils are still having the opportunity to be creative and explore new areas of Theatre. If you are interested in joining Year 9 Theatre Crew, we meet Thursday from 4:15 - 5:15pm in the Drama Department, so do come along and see for yourself!
