Following her recent win in the recent Under-18 SE England Schools championship, talented golfer, Roisin Scanlon (Year 8), competed in the prestigious Women's Amateur Championship (7-12 June 2021) at the Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club.
The historic championship attracts a top international field with an impressive list of former winners including McCormack Medal winner Leona Maguire, and Major champions Georgia Hall and Anna Nordqvist.
The winner gains entry to the AIG Women’s Open, US Women’s Open, The Evian Championship and Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship as well as lifting the historic trophy.
In the first stage of the 2021 Championship, Roisin competed against 143 players, each of whom plays two rounds of 18 holes. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes then qualified to compete in the match play stage of the Championship. Roisin comfortably qualified with rounds of 75 and 77 finishing tied for 23rd place.
In the match play stage, Roisin had wins in round one and two, and in round 3 (last 16 players). She lost in a close match play to Welsh International, Gracie Mayo. This meant Roisin finished the championship tied for 9th place overall. Aged only 13, Roisin is one of the youngest players ever to qualify for this prestigious competition and now has a playing handicap of +2.
Following her impressive performance, she has now been invited to attend the England Girls' Squad National Coaching Session on the 19th and 20th June held at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. Roisin is looking forward to spending time with the national squad players and experiencing the coaching camp.
