Many congratulations to Etienne Maughan (Lower Sixth) and Florence Miller (Upper Sixth), who put in fantastic performances at the 2021 School Games National Finals. After a tough year and a half of lockdown restrictions, 1,300 talented young athletes descended on Loughborough University to compete across 10 sports including disability disciplines.
English Schools’ bronze medallist, Etienne, placed 2nd in the 80m hurdles with a time of 11.32 seconds and has also been selected as a replacement for English Schools’ International.
Representing Team Knight, Florence hit a half-century, narrowly losing in a close fought final against Team Sciver. Florence has also been playing for the Sunrisers cricket Senior team and her County (Northants) where she is a top order batter. She has been making regular contributions, scoring Academy 50s against Middlesex and South East Stars Academy.
Florence said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed the season this year and it was great to end it on a high by gaining a senior contract and selection for the School Games. The School Games were so much fun and it was great to be a part of the top players in the country."
Etienne said: "I was delighted to be selected for my first international competition (School Games) after a difficult eighteen months. The experience I had was amazing, making friends with athletes from all over the country. I also was able to work with high level coaches and team managers as part of Team Rio and use the supportive environment to perform to the best of my ability in competition. I have my final competition of the season later this month where I will represent England in an international between Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I can’t wait for this incredible opportunity and it is a great end to a season in which I have gained so much."
