Mr Mason-McLeod (Head of Hockey)

After winning their group at the East Regional round, the U14s qualified for the East Finals last Thursday at Bedford Hockey Centre. With only one team out of four being able to qualify for the National Finals in February, qualification was going to be tough. Our first game was against King’s Ely and the U14s put in a great performance and won 3-0. The second game was going to be their toughest as they were playing Forest School, who won their group last week. BGS played really well again, and were very unfortunate to lose 0-1. With one game to go and results going our way, we knew we had to draw or win against Norwich High School to go through to the National Finals. Again, the BGS put in a fantastic performance and drew 0-0 and were crowned East U14 Tier 2 Champions.

Last Saturday was our last block Saturday hockey fixtures against local school Kimbolton. After missing a whole year of hockey due to COVID, the students have really improved this term. We had wins for the 1st, U14A, U15A, U11A, U11B, U12A, U12B, U12C, U12E, U13A, U13C, U13D, U13E. Draws for the 2nds and U12D and three close defeats for the U13B, U14B and U15B. The U10A-D’s played some really good hockey in their internal morning fixtures.

On Tuesday, the 1st team played Haileybury College in the quarter finals of the England Hockey Tier 2 Cup. The 1st team played some excellent hockey but unfortunately lost 3-1, with Megan Howlett (Year 11) scoring our goal from a penalty corner. Player of the Match was goalkeeper Sophia Gallagher (Upper Sixth), who had a fantastic match.

We would like to say thank you to all the Upper Sixth students who have now played their last school games. We are incredibly proud of them all and the dedication they have given to hockey throughout their time at BGS.
