Due to changes in COVID restrictions during the Autumn Term, our Lower Sixth students were unable to continue with reading at Shackleton Primary School, which they began in October. However, since the lifting of these restrictions, they have returned to Shackleton twice a week to read with students in Reception through to Year 3.
The opportunity for our students to step outside their comfort zone and ‘be the teacher’ was met with a range of feelings by our students, with most excited but a small number feeling nervous and uncertain. However, as soon as we arrived at Shackleton, the staff and students were extremely welcoming and any nerves quickly faded.
Our students are helping these students with reading and developing their literacy skills, but they are also hoping to inspire a lifelong love of learning.
Lower Sixth students, Kenni Mukiibi and Benita Bampoe summed up their experience: “Seeing the excited looks on the children’s faces when we visited their school, really shows how important it is for us to help younger children and how important we are to them. The smiles on their faces we see every week are priceless and teaches us the importance of supporting our community.”
