We are thrilled to announce that Lower Sixth student, Alex Gentry, has been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship following a rigorous selection process.
One of the most esteemed scholarships in the UK, the competitive selection process takes in the region of 1600 nominated applicants through a series of rigorous steps; The initial stage consists of a detailed written application and physics department reference followed by a two-hour engineering Aptitude examination. This is used to shortlist approximately 600 for the final interview stage. In the region of 270 Scholarships are awarded to those who have consistently shown an aptitude for engineering and a passion to follow this as a career.
Alex who is currently studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected for this award, and am excited for the potential it will create alongside my studies. As well as the financial award for BGS’s STEM departments and myself which will allow me to pursue projects beyond the IB curriculum, the scholarship connects me with an engineering organisation to give me mentorship and guidance through the beginning of my career. For me this is Reaction Engines Ltd., a British aerospace company that is developing solutions for more high-speed flight and accessible space travel, who I’m certain will provide me with the experience I need to head start my career.
“The opportunities the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship have created for me are huge, and I would encourage any Year 11 considering a career in engineering of any sort to apply - registration for 2023 opens on 10th October 2022 so now is the perfect time to discuss with your teachers. The award is also not limited to traditional mechanical engineering; I am interested in a career in software engineering, and other fields such as medicinal physics, chemical engineering and biomedical engineering are also accepted.
“Overall, I cannot wait to begin my journey into engineering with an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, between the work experience opportunities, financial aid, and the invaluable support offered to me by Reaction Engines Ltd. I feel confident this award will kick start my career in engineering.”
