A creative, if a little windswept day was spent by our amazing Lower Sixth Fine Art students at Holkham Beach on Tuesday. Armed with drawing boards, drawing and painting media and plenty of paper, we headed down to the beach in search of inspiration, and we were not disappointed.

The weather was perfect, with moody grey blue skies to contrast with the sandy beach. Students had time to work on a number of responses to the seascape, exploring a wide range of materials and techniques, from expressive charcoal studies to abstract watercolour trials. After a busy day of drawing, the reward of a delicious hot chocolate at the beach café was on offer- a brilliant end to a perfect day!

The work produced was really exciting, and we are very much looking forward to using this as a starting point for our Abstracting Seascapes project after half term.

Jelly Devile (Lower Sixth) reflected: “We spent the day sitting on the beach using a range of media like pen, graphite, pencil and watercolors. By doing this we created a wide range of primary source drawings which will be the beginning and base of our project.

“I enjoyed the day because it allowed me to achieve a lot of different types of responses to the seascape we were observing. Also, we took a lot of photos which we can use to start the project effectively helping us to create a wide range of responses in the studio. It was lovely to spend the day at the beach with my class and teachers just sitting drawing and taking in the sea side.”
