By Mrs Reeves (Head Rowing Coach)
On Saturday 4th February, almost 40 rowers from BGS travelled to Peterborough to compete at the Head of the Nene for our first race of 2023. With the main part of our head racing season, and the summer regatta season fast approaching, our rowers have been looking forward to and working hard to prepare for this evening. The Head of the Nene is a 2.5km or 5km (depending on age group) race against the clock, and the wind, to compete for the fastest time of the day in your age categories.
The day was a successful one, particularly for our younger age groups. Our J15 quads put in very solid performances, with our J15 quad recording our first win of the day over Kings School Ely and Star Club. Well done to Emily Feiger, Bella Moretto, Gracie Beech, Eva Blake and Sonia Erwig. This was quickly followed by more impressive rows from our Senior and J16 quads, and another category win for our J16 eight over Nottingham and Union Rowing Club. A great performance in the J16 eight from Licia Cacioppo, Rosie Foster, Jess Wiggs, Ellie Mullan, Elyse Vickers, Ais Fitzpatrick, Carys Roberts, Evie Hayward and Martha Ibbott.
We now look forward to three of our annual National events to conclude our head racing season for 2022/2023 – Women’s Eights Head of the River, The Schools Head and the National Junior Sculling Head.
