By Mrs Reeves (Head Rowing Coach)
During the second week of the Easter holidays, 45 rowers from Years 10 to Upper Sixth travelled to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham for our annual training camp. We were blessed by fantastic weather, and enjoyed four days of rowing in the sunshine and on flat water. The perfect conditions for rowing.
Our rowers completed three sessions on the water each day – working on their technical skills, and practising their standing starts and side by side racing on the multi-lane course ahead of our main regatta season beginning this term. They balanced this with structured revision sessions each day, with a stunning location to work looking over the lake. All students were fantastic, and a credit to BGS with fantastic attitude and commitment to their rowing and revision, working very hard. It was also brilliant to spend time as a full Boat Club, with a fantastic quiz and talent show organised by the rowers keeping us entertained after dinner! View photos from the rowing camp here.
We now move into our main racing season, and have certainly started as we mean to go on. On Saturday 22nd April, 18 rowers from BGS were selected to represent the Eastern region at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta. Our J15 quad of Emily Feiger, Bella Moretto, Gracie Beech, Eva Blake and Cox Alex Gentry, put in some great rows to finish seventh overall. Our J16 eight of Carys Roberts, Evie Hayward, Charlotte Peck, Erin MacFarlane, Ivy Nelson, Jess Wiggs, Lily Simester and Aisling Fitzpatrick coxed by Licia Cacioppo finished 5th overall in the competition, and the J16 four of Martha Ibbott, Ellie Mullan, Elyse Vickers and Emily Dyall finished sixth overall.
On Sunday 7th May, all of the Boat Club will be racing at Bedford Regatta where we look forward to combining a fantastic day of racing with celebrating the King’s Coronation. It would be great to see lots of BGS support join us as we race on home water.
