On Saturday 3rd February, just under 40 BGS rowers travelled to Peterborough to compete at their Head of the Nene event. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for our rowers to compete over a longer distance, ahead of our upcoming National Head races after the half term break.
Battling with strong head wind, our U15 quads were the first to take to the water. Racing over 2600m, our A and B quads finished 2nd and 1st in their respective categories. After lunch, it was the turn of our U16 and Senior crews. Boating in three eights, our more senior oarswomen competed over 5000m, again great preparation for heading to the Tideway after half term. Our First VIII, improving each time they raced, finished 2nd behind a very strong Nottingham crew. Our U16 VIII, having made much progress from their previous race day, finished 4th racing an age group up. Following injury and substitutions, our 2nd VIII had a challenging row, but with lots of learning and a challenge to their resilience are full of motivation ahead of this week’s competition.
This Sunday, 11th February, all rowers from the Boat Club will compete on home water at Bedford Fours & Eights Head. This will be an exciting day for all involved, as our Year 9s compete for the first time! BGS crews will be in action from 9.00am, and it would be great to see lots of support on the river bank.
