On Wednesday 31st January, Year 9 and Year 10 students in sets 1 and 2 participated in the UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge in the Main Assembly Hall. The Mathematical Challenge is an hour long, comprising 25 multiple choice questions aimed to stimulate mathematical problem solving. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The questions on the paper are designed to challenge students to think, not to guess. No calculators allowed!
An example of a question on this year’s paper is:
The students had a chance to get a bronze, silver or gold certificate (in the ratio 3:2:1) if they were in the top 50% of the UK from all those students taking the challenge. Twenty-one students achieved a bronze certificate, four achieved a silver certificate, and two were awarded a gold certificate. Shalome Kirupakaran was awarded the best in Year 9 with a silver award, Zaynab Choudhury in Year 10 achieved a gold certificate, and Mahdiyah Meghji in Year 10 was the best in school with a gold award.
Mahdiyah has also qualified for the next round – Pink Kangaroo. A big congratulations to all these students.
