Senior School

By Mrs Cruse (Head of Years 7 and 8)

Years 7 and 8 have been exploring various techniques to assist them in revising for assessments. As a tutor team, we deemed it crucial to introduce them to different revision methods at this stage of their educational journey so that they understand what works for them and what does not.

Initially, students were asked to reflect on their past study methods, considering what had worked well and why, as well as identifying any techniques that may not have been as effective and the reasons for this. They were encouraged to openly share any concerns or worries they had about assessments, with reassurance offered as needed. It was explained that assessments aim to assess understanding and pinpoint areas needing further assistance, rather than to catch students out. They were reminded of the importance of learning from mistakes and reassured that it's okay not to meet every expectation.

In preparing for assessments, students in Years 7 and 8 have not only explored a range of techniques including chunking, mind maps and note-taking, but have also considered the significance of relaxation, receiving guidance on enhancing their memory. Numerous discussions have centred on the benefits of sleep, exercise, mindfulness and relaxation.

The primary takeaway for Years 7 and 8 is the recognition that these years are pivotal for acquiring techniques tailored to their individual needs, with an overarching message that we expect them to always strive for their best.
