We are delighted to congratulate four of our talented mathematicians who participated in the British Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (BMOG) on Wednesday 25th September 2024. Their hard work and dedication were evident as they took on the challenging two-hour competition and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. Well done to Keya Badheka – Certificate of Distinction, Isabelle Cochrane – Certificate of Distinction, Alicia Hui – Certificate of Merit and Hannah Chirayil – Certificate of Merit.

The BMOG is an annual competition designed to celebrate and encourage the mathematical talents of young women across the UK. Founded by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), it provides a platform for students to showcase their skills, solve complex problems and build confidence in a field where females have often been underrepresented.

The competition, held every October, brings together some of the brightest young female mathematicians from secondary schools across the UK. Participants solve six complex, proof-based problems that require logical reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Unlike traditional maths exams, the BMOG focuses on mathematical proofs, encouraging students to think critically and present their solutions clearly. These skills are vital for success in advanced mathematics and many STEM careers.

The BMOG is both a competition and a stepping stone to further opportunities. Exceptional performances can lead to the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) and international events such as the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

For BGS, the BMOG is a valuable chance to support and inspire young women in mathematics. We are proud of all our students who took part and look forward to their continued success.
