By Harriet Knights, Lower Sixth
Last Thursday eight Lower Sixth girls took part in the European Youth Parliament Debate at Newnham College, Cambridge.
Throughout the day there were six debates with one language debated at the end.
Having had research sessions during lunches at school we were able to contribute well to these and move the debate on, despite this being the first debate that many of us had taken part in.
We were the committee of Human Rights. Imi Marchant put forward a brilliant proposal speech addressing the rise in racial hate crimes and the need for a greater standard of education within schools surrounding prejudice and how to spot signs.
The questions posed by the other committees were challenging to answer but we were able to answer them well.
Our conclusion speech, by Millie Sutton, ended our debate nicely and resulted in the motion being passed.
The language debate at the end was a lot of fun for everyone. People contributed with French, Catalan, German, Vietnamese, sign language and so many more.
Unfortunately, we did not win the debate but it was a great experience.
