On Monday 5th June, Year 5 arrived at school after half term, to be transported to 490 BC — Persia is invading Greece. Pushing towards the city-state of Athens, the Persians reach Marathon a few miles away. The Athenians stand 10,000 strong to face the invaders, but will it be enough?
The girls entered an uncertain time as residents of Athens. Taking on typical roles found in the Athenian Agora (marketplace) at the time, they serve as wax tablet makers, pottery painters, fresco painters and jewellers.
As the children work, news and rumours swirl through the Agora about the battle. Can the Persians be defeated? Is Athens safe? After an eventful morning of role plays the girls enjoyed an afternoon of Greek theatre.
Miss Crawford-Smith, Junior School Teacher, summarises the day: ”It was fantastic to see the girls getting so excited throughout the day - the looks of glee on their faces when they heard a rumour about the baker taking bribes and off they skipped to the oracle to ask what should be done about it. The day was full of practical learning, storytelling and drama; a brilliant way to kick off the new half term”.
