The Art of Tailoring

Olivia Cheshire (Upper Sixth)

On Thursday afternoon (27th September), students in Year 11 and Sixth Form were lucky enough to have a Textiles workshop based on the art of tailoring by Jorden Barratt, who had previously trained and worked on Savile Row.

During the workshop, we were introduced to the process behind making a bespoke, tailored suit. This was fascinating for us to gain an insight into the world of fashion outside of the classroom and look into how we could develop our own unique aesthetic.

Jorden’s enthusiasm for her art form was easy to recognise as she explained how she would spend an impressive 100 hours, or more, hand stitching and embroidering each suit, which would be personal to her clients. We found this to be really inspiring, to see how she was able to satisfy her customers’ needs and requirements, whilst keeping her own style in each garment.

A pearl of wisdom that she was able to pass down to us was “that something is not a problem, unless you are not able to fix it”, and we believe, as textiles students, this is something that will follow us through our studies and life.
