Mrs Smart (Head of Science)

Many congratulations to our Year 9 STEMettes, Sirisha Arun, Hannah Whalley, Emily Polhill, Tobiloba Apesin and Eleanor Knowlden, who have been awarded the Bronze CREST Award.

The Awards scheme is the only nationally recognised accreditation scheme for STEM project work for 5-19 year olds. Around 40,000 students in the UK gain CREST Awards every year through investigations and enquiry-based learning, supporting them to solve real-life STEM challenges.

During STEM Club last year, the girls completed a Carbon Capture and Storage project. They investigated the properties of carbon dioxide gas, discovered different methods of capturing it before being released into the environment and then investigated different types of rock to determine the best structures for storage.

The girls then designed a model Carbon Capture and Storage facility in order to qualify for the Bronze CREST Award. We are currently submitting an expression of interest to present the project at an Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges showcase in London during British Science Week (9 – 18 March 2019) next year.
