Mr Hertout (MFL Teacher) and Mrs Hoar (English Teacher)
This morning, Sixth Form students from A-level and IB groups met today to discuss the topic of languages and identity. Students were given a range of thought-provoking statements such as ‘you should do all you can to keep your first language’ or ‘I don’t like it when I hear people speaking in a foreign language in Britain, they should be speaking in English’.
Mixing personal experiences and opinions, girls demonstrated their intellectual confidence through principled yet balanced arguments. The timing and the direction of the debate were entirely dictated by the students themselves, allowing time for reflection and to develop their ideas to the full.
As teachers, we were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the discussion and all participants agreed that we should repeat this experience on a regular basis.
