Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE)
There have been fantastic individual and team athletic performances during the Summer Term, including a gold, silver and bronze for Autumn Handscombe (Year 10) in the recent County Championships and Years 8 and 9 winning the Junior Girls District Competition.
Autumn, who competed for Biggleswade Athletics Club in the U17 Bedfordshire Athletics County Championships (Saturday 11th May) claimed gold in the discus, silver in the javelin and bronze in the shot. This is Autumn's first season competing in athletics outside of school. She joined Biggleswade Athletics Club in December and only started training in the discus last month.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Years 8 and 9 athletes produced magnificent performances under the sparkling blue sky at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium.
With the sun shining, the girls were ready to tackle an array of track and field events ranging from long and high jump, shot, javelin to sprint and middle distance events.
There was incredibly stiff competition from the 12 schools taking part. Nonetheless, BGS put in some fantastic performances throughout the day, including four personal bests and finishing top three in every event entered.
Resilience and desire were prominent throughout the day, which culminated in BGS being crowned District Champions, with Lincroft Academy placing second and Samuel Whitbread Academy/Redbourn Upper School joint third. We now wait to hear who has been selected to represent North Bedfordshire at the County Championships in June.
