Last Saturday saw the 1st X lacrosse team travel to Aldershot to compete in the prestigious annual Lacrosse Challenge Cup. Eight schools, invited based on finishing places at last year’s National Schools, competed in a knockout competition across 40-minute matches.

Tent pitched and warm up complete, BGS faced Caterham School in the first match. BGS set the pace of the game immediately and quickly scored a goal within the first minute of play. BGS remained on top at half time. The second half saw a very strong Caterham team find some rhythm and after some well worked attacking plays, they inched into the lead. Unfortunately, the final score finished 9-8 to Caterham, but the girls felt a huge buzz and it was certainly a great platform for their playoff game against Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH) School.

LEH were a top four finisher at Nationals in March 2019. Once again, BGS made a fast start and scored the first goal. Maddie Axford (Lower Sixth) who plays at centre was instrumental in the number of times she won the centre draw. However, it proved difficult getting the ball past their defence and goalkeeper. LEH managed to get a few goals and as they moved towards the final phase of the game BGS were faced with a 5-goal deficit. After a two-minute time-out, BGS were not ready to let this game slip away. Every player gave it everything until the final whistle, and BGS scored three goals in the final two-minutes of the game, but as time ran out the final score was 11-9 to LEH.

This was a great day’s competition, as the team build towards the 2020 National Schools Lacrosse Competition!

Team: Eleanor Schwalm, Navina Brown, Annabelle Foxall, Holly Smith, Amy Chappelhow, Maddie Axford, Luka Glew, Emily Dunning, Emily Edwards, Milly David, Liz Bruce, Katie Lunn and Christine Pearson.
