Apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships are becoming an increasingly popular option for students once leaving school or college, with a wide range of companies offering them as a way to gain work experience whilst studying.

We have had a number of alumnae come into school over the past year to give Lunch Box Lectures on the apprenticeships or degree apprenticeships they have been involved in since leaving BGS. There has been an interest in these topics so we wanted to highlight this route during last week’s Apprenticeship Week event.

The week kicked off on Monday 2nd December with a session with Mrs Whitlock (Head of Careers) on “Introduction to Apprenticeships”. During this talk Mrs Whitlock covered all of the basic knowledge students need regarding apprenticeships, including what they are, where to find them and what the benefits can be.

Next was the return of 2023 alumnae, Katherine Taylor, a popular speaker from earlier in the year, who gave us an update on why she loves her Project Controls Apprenticeship at MBDA. She told the attending students about what her apprenticeship entails, the benefits that she has found, and how she knew that it was the right path for her.

On Thursday 5th December 2022 alumna Sophie Scott, came in to speak about her Business and Management Degree Apprenticeship at Mercedes Benz. She discussed how her time is split up between the studying and working aspects of the apprenticeship, answered questions on the application process, gave examples of where to find apprenticeships that you may be interested in, and went through what she believes are the pros and cons of apprenticeships vs university.

We’d like to extend our thanks to the two speakers for coming into school and giving the attending students invaluable information and advice. Both have also expressed that they are happy to answer any questions, and we can pass these along to them.

We hope that these talks gave students a better understanding of apprenticeships. If anyone was unable to attend in person, we can send over the presentations used. All talks were also recorded and will be available to watch soon.
