The South Asian Society is a school-wide society that aims to educate our school community on the beauty of South Asian cultures, whilst celebrating them. We are here to serve and support students from the South Asian region consisting of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Myanmar, as well as from the rest of the world who are interested in the South Asian cultures.
The South Asian Society wants to create a united support system that cuts across different countries, cultures, traditions, conflicts and political differences, creating a diverse group of like-minded and dynamic individuals with the initial aim to bring pride back to the BGS South Asian community by starting this society. We would also like to educate the wider community about the beauty of South Asian culture, which will ensure comfort for South Asian students within the school. We don’t want to be a community where students feel like they have to downplay their culture and we believe that by educating the whole school, we can create an inclusive community in which everyone can embrace their culture within our already diverse community.
Our year began with Anti-Racism Week, a week dedicated to educating the school community on anti-racism, focusing on aspects such as diagnosing racism, racism towards different ethnic groups, and the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Now, our primary focus for the rest of this academic year is celebrating South Asian Heritage Month at the end of the year through House competitions, assemblies, workshops and more!
