Mrs Smart (Head of Science)
On Friday, our Physics Technician, Miss Lang, hosted a STEM Ambassador talk for Year 7. She spoke about her journey into Materials Science and Engineering, the different types of engineering career opportunities there are out there and highlighted that not all engineers wear hard hats!
The students were then challenged to design and construct model towers out of newspaper. They were given limited supplies, including five sheets of newspaper and 1m of tape, paralleling the real-world limitations faced by engineers, such as economic restrictions as to how much material can be used in a structure. The aim was to build their towers for height and stability. It certainly isn’t as easy as it sounds!
Students were awarded House points for being Bold, Imaginative and Reflective!
Claudia Jewers (Year 7) said: “I think the talk on Friday morning was really enjoyable. It made me understand more about materials science and STEM in general. My favourite part was probably when we got to build towers and see whose group had the tallest tower.”
Holly Katasi (Year 7) said: “I found the STEM talk really interesting as we were able to look at different types of engineering and the exciting careers associated with it. The newspaper tower building was also very fun as we had to work together and find the best way to get the tallest tower!”
