In a bid to raise awareness of the fast fashion industry and vital funds for charity, Lower Sixth Economics students Jemima Peacock and Scarlet Stokes, organised an up-cycle charity event during lunchtimes whereby second-hand clothes in good condition were sold to Senior and Sixth Form students.
Scarlet reflected: “The idea for the school clothing sale was to combat fast fashion, by helping pre-loved clothes find new homes. All the money we raised is being donated to the Bedford Women’s Centre, a charity which supports women in the community to improve the quality of life for them and their families.
“Jemima and I advertised the sale with posters, encouraging students in the Sixth Form to donate their old and unwanted clothes, then the following week we held the sale in the iCreate space every lunchtime. Initially the sale was for Sixth Form students, then we opened it up to everyone as it proved popular with younger students. This was a great opportunity for students to find new pieces of clothing without spending lots of money and without buying from a big unethical or unsustainable brand.
“We hope to potentially make this event an annual event, as it is a great way to help support local charities. We are so grateful for all the students who donated and came to support.”
