On Tuesday, members from the BGS community, students from all Houses and years plus some staff came out to kick off the Sunflower Growing House Competition.

May is notably the sowing month and when hot weather crops are finally sown. To celebrate this, in the courtyard just outside of the Dining Hall, our Eco Club set up a sunflower seed planting station for all. Students were encouraged to sign up and learn how to create a plant-able paper pot from newspaper and plant a sunflower seed to take home with them and grow.

Over 250 Individuals across the Junior and Senior school participated in the kick off and more are expected to join in who were unable to attend the initial planting day. Over the coming months those taking part will receive tailored emails explaining growing tips and next steps as well as social media posts showing off progress while growing the biggest sunflower possible! Every month we will check in without sunflower growers to see how they are progressing!

Which House will grow the tallest sunflower? Stay up to date and follow our Instagram @bedfordgirlseco and Twitter @BGS_Eco.

The competition concludes the first day of the 2022/2023 term!

Number of seeds planted in each house:

Chanel - 52

Nightingale - 52

Franklin - 36

Parks - 32
