LGBT+ History Month is an annual event founded by the charity Schools Out and first launched in February 2005. The objective of this month-long celebration is to connect and reflect on the past and present LGBT+ Community, celebrate LGBT+ culture and progress towards equality overtime, and to explore what lessons of history can teach us for the future.
This year's LGBT+ History Month theme is Behind the Lens. The theme references art in the national curriculum and will be an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of LGBT+ people to television and film. From Directors to make-up artists, screenwriters to choreographers.
Here at BGS, we have celebrated LGBT+ History Month with a variety of events, including Lunch-Time Club activities within the Junior and Senior School LRC, posters displaying historically important LGBT+ figures from across the curriculum-based community and beautiful cakes decorated to show support from our wonderful Greens Kitchen Team. A Senior School assembly led by the GLG Team spoke of the importance of diversity, respect, the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community within the media and the importance of love in all its forms.
Throughout half term we have asked students to take part in our whole school competition to produce a piece of artwork, writing, music that represents their ideas of love. All entries will be displayed throughout the school. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 28th February. Entries should be handed in to the Learning Resources Centre.
