To enhance the study of A Level Politics we have a programme in place inviting guest speakers in so the students can speak to people involved in day-to-day political life. On Thursday 9th February, the Sixth Form Politics students met with the MP for Bedford and Kempston, Mohammad Yasin. An elected Labour Party politician since 2017, he also served as a Bedford Borough Councillor from 2006 to 2019.
The engaging session gave students an opportunity to ask questions about issues that are important to them, life in Parliament and current political events.
Nina Leech (Upper Sixth) reflected: “The visit from our MP Mohammad Yasin was very interesting and helped me understand the life and duties of an MP better. I loved hearing his responses to difficult questions such as what he thought about the government’s immigration policies or the abolition of the charitable status of private schools. Mohammad also gave us information on how to get involved in politics and gave us general advice for the future!”
Sughra Bibi (Lower Sixth) said: “I feel that it was very insightful to see how he built his career. It has made me want to be involved with politics within my community. Moreover, as a Pakistani Muslim it was lovely to see, in person, the representation that I have within parliament.”
Sophia Osborne (Lower Sixth) added: “The talk from Mohammad Yasin was a great insight to the political viewpoint of the MP that represents Bedford. We got the opportunity to ask lots of questions, relevant to the material we are studying in class, which enhanced our political understanding.”
The Politics students next talk took place today from ex Cabinet Minister David Gauke. The students enjoyed a fascinating discussions about the Ministerial Code and life as a member of Theresa May’s cabinet. We look forward to sharing a feature with you all next week.
