Senior School Physical Education

By Chloe Howe (Upper Sixth)

On Friday the 10th of February, pupils studying GCSE PE, A Level PE and/or on the Athlete Support Programme were invited to attend a Sport and Exercise Science Roadshow delivered by the University of Bedfordshire.

We were first given an inspiring talk by Dr Martyn Morris, Head of Sport Science & Physical Activity, about future opportunities in the world of sport. Soon after, we split into groups and observed a cardiovascular ultrasound by Dr Jo Richards, Senior Lecturer. Viewing her professional echocardiographic skills was extremely interesting and observing Mr Castro's (Head of Swimming) heart was something we didn't expect to be doing!

To finish off the day Dr Lindsey Smith, Senior Lecturer, led an array of fitness tests including balance, vertical jump, reaction time, grip strength and even testing our lung capacity. Although fitness tests are targeted at individuals, competitions began to arise and everyone had a lot of fun! Stephanie Strange, student engagement and recruitment manager, was on hand throughout the afternoon to talk about opportunities at the University and we all went away having had a really exciting and thought-provoking afternoon.

Thank you to the University of Bedfordshire and to Mrs Mason-McLeod (Director of Sport) for facilitating the event.
