By Mrs Inkson (Head of Year 6)
On Thursday 9th March, Year 6 participated in an immersive joint activity day Year 6 pupils from Bedford Prep School.
The pupils took part in a range of activities to develop their communication skills, spending half a day at BGS and the other half at Bedford Prep School.
The focus at BGS was how we can communicate safely and responsibly when online. Students in Year 6 are spending an increasingly large amount of time communicating with friends via digital means rather than in person so it is vital that they are aware of how to stay safe.
At BGS, the pupils enjoyed a whole host of activities which included a drama workshop looking at common scenarios faced by pupils when communicating online and how to deal with them. One of the many highlights was a workshop delivered by BGS E-Safety lead, Ms Davies, about being positive online. Ms Davies explained how we are all bystanders when on group chats etc. – when you see something said or shared in a group chat that doesn’t directly impact you but that you know may not be right. What should you do in this situation? What help can you give? What are our responsibilities as a bystander?
During the afternoon, Bedford Prep School ran a range of activities focusing on developing our in-person communication skills. How good are we at listening to instructions? How clear are we when explaining things? Can we work together to solve a problem? How well can we communicate without using words?
The day was great fun for all involved, we all enjoyed the wide variety of activities and learned some valuable skills.
Hattie (6I) said: “‘It was a fun way to learn different skills while working with new people.”
Lottie (6I) said: “It was great to learn how to communicate with people you didn’t really know.”
