By Mrs Schofield (Head of Year 4)

On Friday 14th March, as part of their learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources, Year 4 took a relaxing walk by the river to investigate the famous Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The girls were visibly taken aback by the power of the water and fascinated by the two Archamedic screws used to create electricity. They learned that the once derelict Victorian boat slide was converted to a power station in 2012 and is still used to power the street lighting along the river and the remaining power is sold back to the National Grid.

It really is fabulous to have this 'working' example of hydro-power on our doorstep. On our return the girls began using their research skills to find out more about hydro power, and the advantages and disadvantages of this energy source. Sadly, as the turbines were not turning, the girls did not get to see them in action, but it was a clear demonstration of some of the disadvantages of hydro-power!
