By Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)

This week, Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to visit the cinema to watch Kensuke’s Kingdom, a film adaptation of the Michael Morpurgo book they studied last term. This work formed part of our Unit of Inquiry, Exploration leads to new connections and understandings of the world.

Watching the film brought a fresh perspective to a story the girls know well, sparking interesting discussions about how characters and plot can be adapted for the screen. It was fascinating for them to compare the book and film, considering the choices made by filmmakers and how they impacted the story’s message.

This experience reinforced an important lesson - there is great value in reading the book first! The trip was a wonderful way to bring their learning to life and celebrate their engagement with literature in a new and exciting way.

Amukta (5BR) said “I really liked seeing the differences between the film and the book – some of the differences really surprised me!”

Emma (5CS) commented: “It was so interesting to see the story come to life because we read it last term.”

Zoya (5W) added: “We knew what was going to happen but it was different as they told the story in another way. It was such a fun morning for us!”

Elisa (5B) said: “We were surprised by the differences between the book and the film.”
