By Dr Howe (DofE Manager)
The Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award Sixth Form students spent five days (Monday 5th August - Friday 9th August 2024) of the summer holidays in the beautiful Lake District for their assessed expedition. The students successfully journeyed across Cumbria, starting near Penrith in the east and finishing near Allonby on the west coast, with a lovely view across to Scotland.
After arriving in Mungrisdale in the pouring rain, the girls took the opportunity to check their maps, route cards, and kit before getting a good night’s sleep in the village hall. The next morning, the expedition commenced with the most demanding day – summiting Blencathra (2,847 feet)! The sky was blue, the sun was shining, and the excellent visibility made it a fantastic experience. From the peak, the girls could see Thirlmere and Derwentwater, as well as much of their route for the following day.
Wet conditions followed, with flooded paths allowing the students to take a brief break on the Derwent ferry. The girls continued around Derwentwater towards Braithwaite Lake, camping along the way.
Finally, they arrived at the coast in sunshine. Amid cheers, smiles and sore feet, all participants successfully completed the Expedition section. I was very impressed with their resilience, navigation skills, and most importantly, the support they gave each other during the highs and lows of the experience. My thanks, as always, go to Mrs Sadler (Head of History and Politics) and Mr Bowden (Head of Physics).
Erin Macfarlane said: "The DofE Gold expedition was a good experience that helped me build my resilience. It was difficult both physically and mentally but it was made easier by the support of my friends and the teachers.”
Martha Ibbott commented: “Completing the Gold DofE expedition for me was not simply about the walking; it was about developing my resilience and team-working skills. These are valuable skills that I have learnt and will carry forward into my future.”
Isla Wallwork added: “The Gold DofE expedition served as a great opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone, both physically and mentally. As a group, we persevered through difficult terrain and harsh weather, however it was all worth it for the great sense of achievement the expedition has given me. I would encourage anyone to take part in Gold DofE as the memories made from it are something I will cherish.”
