We are delighted to welcome our new Association Chair, Mrs Sharan Sira, who has recently taken over the role from BGS parent, Mrs Lizzie Thomas.
The Edit interviewed Mrs Sira to find out more about her role and what’s planned for the coming year and beyond.
Could you tell us a little about your background?
I am the Finance Director at Sira Building & Development Limited, where I oversee all financial and legal aspects of the business. My work in this role earned me the distinction of being highly commended as Business Woman of the Year in 2016. I hold a Master’s in Law and live in Bedfordshire with my husband and two children: Manpriya, 14, who attends BGS, and Gurvir, 10, who is at Bedford Prep School.
What motivated you to take on the role of Chair of the Association?
As Chair, my primary responsibility is to serve as a bridge between the school and parents, fostering clear communication to support school initiatives. This includes working closely with parents on fundraising efforts to enhance school projects and opportunities for our students.
I have always admired how BGS nurtures young women to become independent, confident and ambitious, encouraging them to be the best versions of themselves. As Chair, I aim to be a strong advocate for the school and a supportive partner for parents, assisting in the school’s growth and in creating an environment that aligns with the ambitions we hold for our daughters.
How do you see The Association’s role in the school community?
BGS reflects the values of its parents, and I believe it’s essential that each of us feels our children are receiving excellent care, support and education, qualities that are fundamental to any successful educational institution. The Association plays a vital role in strengthening the connection between parents and the school, ensuring that communication is clear and that initiatives are well supported.
What events can parents look forward to this year?
We’re excited for our upcoming events! Our Christmas Fayre will take place on Saturday 7th December 7 2024, 2pm until 4.30pm. It promises to be a joyful occasion, where the girls will undoubtedly charm us into enjoying sweets, desserts, and much more! Hopefully, our waistlines and wallets won’t be too strained.
Throughout the year, we’ll also have our Nearly New Uniform Sale, a valuable opportunity for parents to pick up any needed uniform items they may have missed.
Just before Easter, we’ll hold our annual Quiz Night for friends and family. It’s always a fun and occasionally competitive evening, with parents dressing up, decorated tables and a lively atmosphere.
The year will culminate with a celebratory Ball (or equivalent event), and we hope you will all join us to make it a memorable success. Expect delicious food, well-aged drinks and plenty of dancing!
How can parents get involved or offer support?
I look forward to working closely with all of you to make this an enriching and rewarding experience for both the parents and the school. We would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide. Whether it’s volunteering, contributing ideas, or helping with events, your support makes all the difference.
