Many congratulations to rising hockey star, Maddie Axford (Upper Sixth), who claimed the coveted Girls U18 Tier-1 championship title on Sunday.

Representing Southgate HC U18’s, Maddie competed in what was a highly entertaining match against Repton HC. Both teams looked evenly matched with neither side allowing the other too many clear-cut opportunities.

Maddie was able to score a great breakaway goal to get Southgate HC on the scoreboard early in the first-half and having held the lead for large parts of the game, Southgate HC had looked good value to take victory in regular time. However, Repton’s last-minute strike ensured the game ended 1-1 and would be decided by shuffles. In a tense stand-off, Southgate won 4-3 on penalties to be crowned champions.

Maddie reflected: “The game was an exciting experience, it was so enjoyable to be back playing with my team again, after such a long break off. Being able to perform with such a great group was an honour. From the starting whistle I loved every moment of being back on the hockey pitch and I am looking forward to the oncoming season with Southgate HC, Cambridge City, BGS and England."

Maddie is currently part of the England Hockey U18 Pathway Programme, which provides players with their first taste of international training camps and tournaments. Read more about the programme here.
