BGS proved once again why they are one of the top performing schools in sport by securing a runners-up spot in the U13 England National Schools In2Hockey Championship Finals in Nottingham on Friday 12th May.

Having won their county and regional rounds in the spring term, the U13s set off to Nottingham eager to implement the hours of training into match play. Their first game was against Loughborough High School, the girls started strongly winning 4-0. This first win settled the nerves and gave the girls extra confidence spurring them on to win 2-0 win against Blundell’s School.

With two games and two wins under their belts the next challenge was playing two regional winners in the final pool games. Hill House were next, a tough and competitive game, BGS equalised with 30 seconds to go, the game finished 2-2.

In the final pool game, a draw or win would put BGS through to National Final. BGS held Surbiton High School out for a 1-1 draw and deservedly went through as group winners. The team battled hard and created excellent chances against St Teresa’s School but eventually lost 2-0.

Mr Mason-Mcleod, Head of Hockey at BGS, said: “The girls played with such courage and determination. In every match leading to the final they out fought each team defensively and were deadly in front of goal when the chances arose. The U13s showed all the strong characteristics the BGS hockey teams have and this demonstrates a positive end to a very successful season.”
