Our Year 5 girls rose to the challenge when they were transported back to World War ll, on their trip to Bletchley Park last Thursday. Dressed in 1940s clothes, the girls were able to tour the work huts of the predominantly female workforce of code-breakers, as well as being able to take part in code-breaking activities of their own.
Challenged to solve puzzles, decode messages and cyphers, the girls threw themselves into the war effort. A particular highlight of the visit was being able to experience an Enigma machine first-hand; they were allowed to use the machine to spell out their initials in code.
Mrs Whomsley, Head of Year 5, added: “The girls were completely immersed in their Unit of Enquiry and were inspired by the work and achievements of the workers at Bletchley Park. They proved themselves to be worthy code-breakers showing the valuable skills of perseverance, being risk-takers and inquirers whilst also reflecting on the sacrifices and efforts so many people made during the war.”
