Mrs Cassell (English Teacher)

On Monday, the Sixth Form English Literature students visited Westminster to attend the annual English Literature Conference and various lectures on their AQA Love through the Ages A Level Literature course. The lectures were hugely enjoyable and linked closely to the texts in the course ranging from The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice to Othello. The day provided the girls with many critical interpretations of how the theme of Love is addressed across literature.

The conference closed with an audience with the Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy, as she read from her poetry collections and answered questions on The Feminine Gospels. Jessica Logan posed a question on the significance of Motherhood; the group were delighted with the explanation given and our English Department Twitter feed captures the atmosphere of the auditorium and of the lectures.

Sophia Baker reflected: “I found the conference very beneficial and I am glad I had the opportunity to hear from such renowned scholars. I feel lucky and almost at an advantage to have received tips directly from an examiner and I found the various other speakers’ views on different types of love in literature fascinating.”
