Making healthier choices

On Monday afternoon, Year 3 welcomed BGS parent Mrs Eggleton, who gave an insightful presentation about nutrition and what it means to eat a balanced diet. She is currently training to be a Nutrition Coach with the Centre for Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management in partnership with Middlesex University.

Mrs Eggleton said: “In our talk, we discussed what we eat and drink every day and how to make healthier choices. We imagined our body was a spaceship and that our mission was to travel across the universe to see and do a million fabulous and interesting things. If we put the wrong type of rocket fuel in our ship, we might not get very far. Perhaps we’d whizz off at warp speed but then completely run out of fuel and have to get towed back home.

“The girls investigated the ‘eatwell plate’ – a guide to healthy eating - and discussed how we can make informed choices when we fill our plates with food. They created jumbo healthy eating plates and had fun adding foods to each category. They looked at colourful fruits, high five for high fibre! Wholegrain, perfect protein, dollops of dairy, healthy fats and oils, water and limiting sweets or sugary foods and drinks.

“Everyone went home with a piece of yummy healthy food all wrapped up in its own natural packaging for easy transport – a baby orange.

“As an adult learner this was a fantastic experience. I love science and nutrition. I also love food and cooking and so spending an hour talking to the girls about my favourite subject was an excellent way to spend an afternoon. Thank you very much for the opportunity.”
