Miss Coote (Year 3 Teacher)

On Wednesday, Year 3 met in the Junior School Library for their final Reading Breakfast of the year. This has been a half-termly event where the girls participated in shared reading with their parents, peers and teachers.

Whilst the purpose of this event was to foster positive attitudes towards reading, there were other benefits such as enriched language exposure and the development of listening skills. The parents involved were also given the opportunity to read aloud to small groups, something that was much loved by the girls.

Clover said “I liked it when my mum sat down to read a book to me and my friends.” Other pupils also enjoyed the special themed Reading Breakfast all about Julia Donaldson. Amelia said: “I liked reading Julia Donaldson books as a group – she is one of my favourite authors, so I did well in the quiz at the end!”

However, the reading experience can be summed up by Allegra. She said “I like the Reading Breakfast because when a mummy is reading to me I close my eyes and explore the story with my mind.” This is a result of parent-child reading which activates brain areas related to narrative comprehension and mental imagery.

The support Year 3 have been given by their parents this year has been incredible and Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3) and I would like to extend our greatest thanks for the help and time given. Each session has been full to capacity and the effect it has had on the girls is lovely to see.
