Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)
At the start of this half term to mark World Environment Day, I launched a challenge to the whole Junior School in light of the ongoing issue surrounding fast-fashion and the environmental costs of the clothing industry. As part of this, each student designed an outfit using either recycled, re-used or repurposed materials (or a mixture of these) and, as a class, they voted for a design to create and make to share with each other.
On Monday afternoon, we celebrated with an Eco Parade of outstanding outfits. The outfits were inspirational with their creative and ambitious designs. Every pupil had contributed in some way to the creations, which were embellished with beautiful decorations and accessories including hats, bags and even shoes!
As teachers, we were astounded by their collaboration and independence as they approached this challenge. They used many of their thinking and problem-solving skills to approach the task and plan their work as well as incorporating the skills some had been practising in their Units of Inquiry this year, such as sewing.
A huge thank you to our judges, who provided fantastic feedback to the Junior School, comprising Mrs Eagles, Mrs Howe, Mrs Lugsden and Mrs Hudson-Findley.
