On Saturday 17th June, five swimmers from Years 5 and 6 travelled to Sheffield for the ESSA Primary Schools' Team Relay Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.
BGS qualified for the Championships last term, and all of the Years 5 and 6 swimmers have been training hard in the pool since to secure a spot on the team. The freestyle relay team consisted of Izzy Morris, Rosanna Melvill, Leah Munday, and Eva Jackson, and the medley relay team was Leah Munday, Evelyn Brown, Eva Jackson, and Izzy Morris. Both teams put in a fantastic effort in the heats and qualified for their respective B Finals.
In the finals, the freestyle team placed fourth in a very competitive race, and the medley team then finished sixth in their final. This placed the teams 12th and 14th overall nationally in the Open Schools category – schools with more than 100 pupils in curriculum Years 5 and 6.
It was a fantastic day with the swimmers who were really positive and excited. We're looking forward to seeing them develop further and racing again next year in the ESSA Secondary Schools Championships!
