By Miss Coote (Year 6 Teacher)
In this week's Year 6 Inquiry lessons, the girls investigated a crucial aspect of their third line of inquiry: The impact of migration on communities, cultures, and individuals.
Focusing on the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the girls skilfully explored alternative perspectives. Their investigation extended beyond historical facts to a nuanced understanding of Caribbean culture, delving into the complex emotions and experiences of the Windrush generation.
Connecting this immersive experience with their English curriculum, they engaged with various poems that provided poignant insights into the stories and aspirations of those who arrived on the Windrush, vividly illustrating the diversity Caribbean culture has contributed to the UK.
Inspired by this exploration, Year 6 students embarked on crafting their own Windrush-inspired poetry. This week's interdisciplinary journey not only showcased historical understanding but also emphasised the power of literature to foster empathy and connection. It reinforced the open-minded nature of their education.
