By Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)
We have been busy in Year 5, designing and creating games to educate others about Space. The games form our end of unit GRASP task in which the girls can showcase their knowledge in a creative way. From being inspired by existing games, such as Monopoly and Guess Who, to their original inventions, every game is designed for other children of their own age, to inspire and educate about space. We will be sharing and playing these on the final morning of school as part of our class parties.
As always, the Year 5 teachers have been so impressed by the collaborative work, organisational skills and imagination that has gone into these innovative creations. Every resource for the game has been carefully designed and made, along with careful instructions written to guide other pupils when playing their games. We are sure we have future game designers amongst us!
Jess (5B) said: “We have enjoyed working together to show our understanding of space. We were inspired by lots of different games and have created something original.”
Esme (5BR) added: “It was really fun making our game. We created a ‘Snap’ game using the planets and the information about them to find pairs. We have found so much about the planets from our research, it is surprising how hot/cold some planets are!”
Felicity (5CS) explained: “It has been really fun at times, even though it has been challenging trying to code the right blocks. You have to tell Scratch exactly what to do using the blocks, but you can’t just tell it - make this game amazing - you have to code it yourself!”
Sakinah (5W) reflected: “It’s really fun to work with people we don’t usually work with to create a fun game. Our game is like Snakes and Ladders but you have star constellations and black holes instead of Snakes and Ladders. To get extra points, you must answer questions about our solar system. Our game is out of this world!”
