Junior School Science

The annual British Science Week (9th – 18th March 2018) aims to commend all sciences and their importance in our everyday lives. It provides an opportunity for people of all ages to take part in science, engineering, technology and mathematics events and activities.

The Bedford Girls’ School Junior STEMettes were truly inspired this week, as they met and worked with female ambassadors from different fields in STEM. Girls worked collaboratively to build a satellite that would carry a fragile payload (an unsuspecting egg), used Python to write code, had the opportunity to think about the Earth and how the continents and physical features were formed over millions of years and designed and built structures to store beans carefully off the ground in provided containers.

There were further opportunities for the girls to immerse themselves in Mathematical problem solving as the week progressed and culminated with The Bonkers Balloon Science Show.

Bedford Girls’ School has a strong affiliation with the STEM subjects and recognises the importance of providing opportunities for girls to encounter female role models from an early age, who have chosen a career in these fields. It really was rewarding to see the girls enthused and engaged throughout the week.
