BGS Head Swimming coach Mr Castro stormed to victory at not one, but two sprint triathlons last weekend, qualifying for both the European and World Triathlon Championships in the process.
An accomplished elite triathlete, Mr Castro won the World Age Group Sprint Distance in 2014 and European Champions Age Group Standard Distance in 2015 and 2016.
We spoke to Mr Castro about his back-to-back triathlons, he told us: “Competing in back-to-back sprint triathlons tested my physical and mental recovery. On each day, I swam 750m, cycled 20km and ran 5000m. However, I knew from the training I had done before and after school, I was in good shape and was in a position to push hard in each of the disciplines.
On Saturday, I travelled to Nottingham seeking to qualify for the European Triathlon Championships taking place this summer in Glasgow, Strathclyde Country Park (Saturday 11th August). I managed to put a good race together and won the age group category qualifying for the Championships.
The next day I travelled to Eton Dorney, this time looking to qualify for the World Triathlon Championships, which is taking place in the Gold Coast, Australia (Wednesday 12th – Sunday 16th September 2018). I was extremely pleased to win this race in my age category; my swimming has always been strong but I’ve really worked hard to improve my cycling and running, which showed at this event.”
