Miss Fisher (Year 4 teacher)

On Friday 28th February, Year 4 boarded the bus to Coldham Wind Farm, excited about the prospect of finding out more about renewable sources of energy.

The girls were split into two groups, with one group heading to the visit the colossal wind turbines, and the other to explore both solar and wind power in the classroom. The visit to the turbines provided an opportunity for the girls to experience what the turbines are like first hand, they employed their mathematical skills to discover how big they are and how much electricity they were producing at that time. We had to brave cold and windy temperatures, but this enabled the girls to record lots of interesting data.

Whilst in the classroom, the girls developed their scientific and problem solving skills experimenting both wind and solar kits. They had to solve problems such as, how many blades should be used on a wind turbine and how much solar power do we need to run various small appliances?

The girls used questioning and thinking skills to deepen their understanding and think about how we could improve our use of energy at home and at school.
